examples of horizontal and vertical integration:

Google vertical integration explained

The Google search engine, while free, is monetized with paid advertising. In 2021 Google's advertising generated over $209 billion (beyond Google Search, this comprises YouTube Ads and the Network Members Sites) compared to $257 billion in net sales

synergy

Google has lifted the lid on an upgrade for instant messaging service chat(opens in new tab), which will now work more closely with other google workspace(opapplications.

(opens in newthe company announced that Chat will now make intelligent suggestions based on data drawn down from Google Calendar(opens in new tab)

For example, if someone has a meeting coming up, Chat will create a temporary messaging channel that can be used to notify co-workers of any delays or share resources ahead of the session. This channel will become available ten minutes before the meeting and remain live for ten minutes after.

diversification

Diversification is a core business strategy of Google because it allows the company to create new markets and retain existing customers, thereby creating a pool of Google-dependent Internet users.

2) Do you agree that governments should prevent media conglomerates from becoming too dominant? Write an argument that looks at both sides of this debate.

i disagree mainly as the media conglomerates help people out for example google is a search engine that has so much information so help people in any circumstance and scenario where they need information, whether it’s for education or personal advice it has an answer for most questions. They also have google classroom for education, google workspace for adults work , google maps for people to navigate their way around and get directions to get somewhere and much more. there is access to any source of resource. so i believe that it also bring joy e.g Disney can bring entertainment from a screen on Disney  plus where there’s a program for all ages or in real life where they can go to a Disney store or Disney land and get happiness and entertainment for all ages.

i partially agree as it does take over a lot as it is expensive company’s which have taken over the land where homes can be built. Or the fact that people depend on this for their happiness which means they have dominated land, peoples happiness and a bunch money has gone into it making the company’s extremely rich which means with this money they have a lot of power .

1) Briefly describe the production, promotion and distribution process for media companies.

The production process provides audiences with the media products they want. It needs to consider the audience’s desires and should provide the gratifications the audience expects. The promotion process researches
and identifies the target audience for the product, and uses advertising and marketing strategies to inform and persuade them of the value of the media product. The distribution process uses the most appropriate methods for
getting the product to the audience and making it as easy as possible for them to access it.

2) What are the different funding models for media institutions?
Licence fee paid by the public, Sales of programmes and formats to other broadcaster ,Fees paid by advertisers buying advertising space on the channel, Programme sponsorship.

3) The article gives a lot of examples of major media brands and companies. Choose three examples from the article and summarise what the writer is saying about each of them.
ITV relies on income generated by advertisers. This means that appeal to a large audience are seen as more valuable than ones with smaller niche audiences
• Sky One needs an income from subscribers and may well invest in programming that attracts a loyal audience, who are more likely to invest in a long term subscription to guarantee early access to the shows they enjoy.
• The Mail Online receives more income the longer a reader stays on the site, so stories will feature lots of images and videos, and sensationalised or controversial

4) What examples are provided of the new business models media companies have had to adopt due to changes in technology and distribution?
The music industry can no longer generate most of its profits through the sale of music itself, so other ways to make money have been sought. Sponsorship, merchandising, and the income generated by live shows are some of the ways it seeks to recoup its investment.
The movie industry has invested enormous sums of money into 3D technology, in order to encourage
audiences into cinemas.
Some online newspapers now require audiences to subscribe to access their content or provide premium content
to those who pay for mobile apps.
,
5) Re-read the section on 'The Future'. What examples are discussed of technology companies becoming major media institutions?
• Google now owns YouTube, and has revolutionised the way we access music and moving-image
entertainment and information.
• Amazon, Netflix and Yahoo now create, produce and ‘broadcast’ their own TV shows, such as Transparent, Orange is the New Black and Community.
• Facebook has bought the virtual reality technology one potential benefit for audiences is that it allows users
to ‘attend’ and ‘experience’ events without leaving their own homes.

6) Do you agree with the view that traditional media institutions are struggling to survive?
i partially agree with this as traditional media institutions need to adapt their content to intrigue the audience and keep them entertainment. if they can maintain there current audience and attract their other audience i believe that they can be good however this would be a struggle for them.

8) How do YOU see the relationship between audience and institution in the future? Will audiences gain increasing power or will the major global media conglomerates maintain their control?
i believe that the audience have the power the whole media conglomerates stay in business for pleasing the customers desires and keep them entertained, if the audiences wants change so will the conglomerates production too fit what the audience wants and that shows that the audience controls the media e,g in 2016/2017 Musically was the app that was viral and it slowed died down so the company changed the name and the videos being posted and during 2020 it went viral again as audiences were attracted to it
