Narrative: blog task

1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.
In the smurfs they are living in there happy village peacefully, everything is good, this is the equilibrium. then the wizard comes over and terrorises the smurfs leading some of them to run away and get sucked into a blue tunnel which brings them to the streets of Manhattan being crashed through by the wizard, this is the disequilibrium. then by the end they defeat the wizard and end up back at there village and all is happy and it has a positive ending, this is the new equilibrium

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Fact sheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

In this clip the beginning was the equilibrium where the girl was smiling and happily eating her ice cream. then when she knocked over the nice cream over the young girl this was the disequilibrium and this is where she is portrayed as the villain to the audience and they see her tip over a cup of ice cream over an innocent young girl who was being sweet by smiling at her

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
James bond- in the jones bond movies.
the family in Incredibles
Spiderman -Spiderman series of movies

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

When the girl wins the heart of the guy in a romantic comedy the
values of heterosexual relationships and monogamy are reinforced.
In conventional texts crime doesn’t usually pay and the guy most
often gets the girl.

5) What example is provided in the Fact sheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?
The winner often represents the dominant ideas and values of our
culture. When the policeman captures the criminal in a crime drama–
the ideology of the value of law and order is emphasised.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?

Conventional narrative offers gratifications for audiences. Problems
and their complications create enigma (Barthes) for the audience.
The viewers are curious as to what actions (Barthes) will be
undertaken and how the problems will be solved.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series)
These are fictions which have many parts but where the narrative arc is usually resolved at the end of each episode e.g sitcoms normally have this structure
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)
Individual episodes do not tend to have a resolution; this comes at the end of the serial. Often each episode begins with a summary of what occurred in previous episodes in case the audience missed a part. To keep the audience interested the episodes usually end with a cliff-hanger, a tense moment that is unresolved so the audience want to find out what happens next
  • Mixed narrative
the episodes usually deal with a number of small conflicts which resolve at the end of the episode. However, there are a also some overarching narratives,
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)
These have a continuous narrative and they tell a number of different stories at the same time.

8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
it uses the trailers to show the narrative to show the pictures
